Let me tell you a story. Once there was a country which prided itself on democracy and the rule of law. No one was ever to be above the law. Leaders were elected who strove to ensure that all were treated equally, with respect, and were allowed basic freedoms to use when things didn’t go according to these fine principles. People therefore had freedom of speech and the right to peacefully protest in public.

But then there came a time when due to a variety of factors, leaders were elected who seemed to violate these fine principles and some horrible things started happening. Masked “law enforcement” agents were given license to wander the streets and forcibly arrest anyone without any due process at all. Many had never committed crimes and had been in the country for years, working hard and raising a family. Yet these good people were thrown into horrific detention centers. No wonder good people started to protest the actions of these misguided leaders. But the masked agents even shot and killed some of these protesters. It was a sad time for this once hopeful noble country. There was thankfully a strong movement to elect better leaders of another party.

In one county, success at a leadership change occurred dramatically. Suddenly all the old local leadership lost elections to the party of change. Many people were hopeful that things would get better. But the county had limited power and the horrific arrests and detentions continued. One group of wise students who had been taught the virtues of their country could not comprehend the horrific things they were seeing happening in their country. So they decided to protest the brutal arrests and shackling of innocent people that they saw on their media screens every day. They planned to carry signs, sing songs and express their fundamental American right to protest when they perceived things were wrong and needed change. So protest they did!

But suddenly a hefty man came running at a young teenage girl and both were down on the cold ground. And then the old man’s arm was around her neck and terror descended on her that this strong man could choke her to death. Her friends tried to help remove this strange man from her so she could escape his dangerous hold on her neck. There was more confusion and mayhem and what began as a protest turned into a mess. Police came and arrested some of the protesters and some had to spend a few days in jail. The man who attacked the young girl turned out to have been the town’s chief of police so he was not arrested. Later he was given a leave of absence from his job, while the threat of felony charges and jail hung over the protesters who were expressing their concern about the rule of law. Very ironic, eh?

Months dragged on, the chief of police went back to work, and the student protesters had great anxiety about their fate for doing what was allowed in the country they loved. There was an investigation headed by one of the newly elected leaders so there was hope that justice would prevail. Finally, results of the investigation were revealed. Thankfully no more legal action would be pursued against the young protesters, but no charges would be made against the man who attacked the young girl whose neck was throttled.

This story reminds me of a song “Won’t Get Fooled Again” about the naive hope that things would change after a revolution. Its final couplet resonates with me after this story I just told you. I’ll quote the final verses:

“I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray

We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again

Yeah
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss”

The Democratic Party is positioning itself as the party of good, fighting an existential battle for the soul of America against a party gone wayward with corruption, lawlessness, fascism, racism, and cruelty. The People are expecting great change once these new leaders take power. They want justice. They don’t want tiny bread crumbs thrown at them and they definitely don’t want the cruelty of those entrusted with protecting innocent young teenagers to go unpunished.

Democrats, please learn from this story. We don’t want you to accommodate the obvious evil in front of us all. Those who choke young teenage girls need some kind of punishment. The People want new bosses who move America boldly in the right direction. The perception of your refusal to defend the weak is totally unacceptable. You need to be firm and resolute in protecting the weak who have been unjustly attacked.  No one should be above the law. Pandering to the other dark side is unacceptable.

We do not want to descend into the cynicism of meeting the new bosses and seeing they are the same as the old bosses. The People are expecting you to always be a champion of the Good. Please do not disappoint them.
